A refrigerant locking cap is a locking device used on residential air conditioning systems. More specifically – it prevents accessibility to the refrigerant valves on the air conditioner outside. Since R22 and R410A gases are meant to stay inside the refrigeration system, tampering with gases can cause harm to the body and enviornment. Therefore all new air condtioners installed are required to have locking caps installed. These locks are required by code in St. Louis County. Locking the refrigerant valves prevents malicious and abusive tampering of Freon or Puron gas.
A licensed professional will have the key to remove the locks in order to test refrigerant levels or diagnose any problems.
