Carrier Inverter Technology: 5-Speed Cooling is Here
Inverter technology is different in a lot of ways. It offers variable-speed compression that can step down in 5 stages to as low as 25% of its capacity. That’s huge from a comfort perspective. The ability to run in lower speeds most of the time makes it quieter and more adept at removing humidity and keeping temperatures even. Plus, those lower speeds are the sweet spot for the unit’s best efficiency levels and for getting the most benefit out of other systems you might have like an air purifier. The more constant air flow through the system enables better air purification as an air purifier is only effective when air is circulating throughout the home.
Until inverter technology was developed, most air conditioners would operate with one or two stages of capacity. With single stage or single speed cooling, an air conditioner would run at full power on every cooling cycle. Considering an air conditioner is generally sized for 95 degree day in St. Louis, the majority of the summer the single stage unit is oversized. In contrast a two stage air conditioner has the ability to operate at 100% and 70% capacity in high and low speed, respectively. The low speed operation was ideal for cooler temperatures but it wasn’t until the 5-speed inverter that conditions from 65 to 95 degrees could be so perfectly covered.
