Compressor Failure, Repair or Replace?

Compressor Failure, Repair or Replace?

A compressor is to an air conditioner what an engine is to a car. Without a compressor, it is rendered useless. If you’ve ever had the unpleasant experience of having your compressor fail you know how quickly a ceiling fan becomes your last defense against the summer heat. When your compressor fails, you are stuck with the decision to either replace the compressor or replace the entire air conditioner. There are several factors that will help you make an educated decision here:

Is the air conditioner under warranty?

How old is the air conditioner?

Are there lingering issues with other components?

Is the air conditioner under warranty?

If the compressor is under warranty it usually makes sense to use it. Generally a compressor warranty lasts 5-10 years. The labor warranty can generally range from 1-10 years with the average warranty being closer to 1 year. With that in mind it is reasonable to imagine three different scenarios:

  1. AC is under parts and labor warranty – $0
  2. AC is under parts warranty only – $800-$1,200
  3. AC is out of warranty – $1,200-$1.900

In this case the following charges would apply:

New refrigerant re-charge

Filter drier

Warranty claim

Parts acquisition
