In the 1830’s, two Virginians set out westward to settle in the St. Louis area. Ralph Clayton and Martin Hanley convinced the County to make their property the home for the county courthouse by donating over 104 acres of land with only once stipulation. The area surrounding the courthouse had to bear the name of Clayton. In 1877, over 3,000 eager St. Louis residents gathered to witness the groundbreaking of the site of the county courthouse and by the early 1900’s, the courthouse was surrounded by a flourishing city with a schoolhouse, local newspaper, and electric trolley services.
